Congratulations to the Detroit Red Wings

Thank you all for a great season!

DETROIT -- For the third time in six years, Stanley has come home.

The Detroit Red Wings are the 2001-2002 Stanley Cup Champions after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit won the best-of-seven series, four games to one.

For Detroit, it's the 10th Stanley Cup in franchise history; third most in NHL history. Only the Montreal Canadians and Toronto Maple Leafs have hoisted Lord Stanley's trophy more often.

Brendan Shanahan scored twice and Tomas Holmstrom scored for Detroit. Shanahan's power play goal during the second proved to be the game-winner. Carolina's Jeff O'Neill scored a power play goal late in the second to snap the 'Canes eight-plus period scoreless streak.

The Red Wings still have 10 players (Nicklas Lidstrom, Igor Larionov, Mathieu Dandenault, Brendan Shanahan, Kirk Maltby, Steve Yzerman, Darren McCarty, Kris Draper, Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Holmstrom) from the back-to-back Cup years of 1997 and 1998.

For Dominik Hasek, Luc Robitaille, Fredrik Olausson, Pavel Datsyuk, Boyd Devereaux, Steve Duchesne and Jiri Slegr, it's the first time in their careers that they can call themselves Stanley Cup Champions.
